In Scott McCloud's book "Making Comics", there is a whole section on the study of the facial expressions - based on 6 basics - called emotional primaries : Anger, Joy, Surprise, Disgust, Sadness and Fear - the theory is that from these you can build a lot more... (eg: fear+surprise = "spooked")
